Russia’s aviation industry is facing a significant challenge due to the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions imposed by Boeing and Airbus. Prior to the invasion, 77% of Russia’s aircraft fleet was comprised of planes built by these two companies. The sanctions have cut off Russia’s access to crucial spares, equipment, software, technicians, and other essential components. To keep their aircraft running, Russia has been forced to exploit another problem: breaking down old planes to harvest parts to repair those still flying. This aging fleet poses a double risk: older planes themselves, and the use of used spares from other aircraft. As a result, Russia is left with a high-risk fleet, struggling to maintain its aircraft while effectively slowing down its entire air transport system.
