French President Emmanuel Macron held a 25-minute phone conversation with Donald Trump following the latter’s victory in the US presidential election, Le Figaro reports.

According to the Élysée Palace, both leaders expressed “desire to work for the return of peace and stability” amid “ongoing major international crises.”

“Macron emphasized the importance of Europe’s role and told Trump he is ready to continue this conversation and work together” on shared concerns, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, after the Republican’s inauguration, Le Figaro reports.

Macron was among the first EU leaders to congratulate Trump on his 5 November presidential victory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump and referenced “an excellent meeting with President Trump” in September when they “discussed in detail” the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States.
