Back to the MTLB: these vehicles were initially designed as artillery tractors, built with powerful engines, large payload capacity, and crew capacity. This versatility has led to their use in various roles, including supply transportation, troop evacuation, and equipment modification. In Ukraine, they’ve been a crucial component of Russia’s war effort, and we’ve been tracking their numbers at various storage bases.
Through our research, we found several large storage bases with declining MTLB numbers. One of the most striking examples is the 499th base, which has gone from a pre-war inventory of 658 vehicles to just 88, resulting in a drop of 570 vehicles. Another significant decline was seen at the 70th base, which lost 493 vehicles to just 134, with some potentially being mistaken for trucks due to their shape and shadow.
Our research has yielded some stark numbers: from a pre-war total of almost 3,000 MTLBs in storage to just 488 today, representing only 16% of the original stock. If the current rate of decline continues, Russia will likely be left with zero MTLBs in storage within seven months. However, it’s essential to note that not all MTLBs are stored; some are in active service in Ukraine or undergoing repairs for future use. Additionally, a similar vehicle, the MTLB, has a different design and is used as a command post, with 1,300 in storage pre-war, and 925 today.
