Estonian reacts to Pearl Harbor
Video Summary
The Japanese Empire, led by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, planned a surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a first step in its plans to expand its empire in Southeast Asia. The attack was intended to weaken the US Pacific Fleet and prevent it from interfering with Japan’s expansion plans. The Japanese planned a complex and ambitious attack, using dive bombers, high-altitude bombers, and torpedo planes to sink the US ships. The attack was seen as a huge success by the Japanese, as they damaged or sank eight American battleships, 219 aircraft, and caused 3,497 casualties, while suffering minimal losses themselves. However, the attack also drew the US into the war, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a famous speech, known as the “Infamy Speech,” calling for a declaration of war against Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of the Pacific War, which would last until the end of World War II.
