Putin Took Luhansk, but at What Cost to Russia?

Russia’s Disastrous Invasion of Ukraine: The Real Story Behind the Numbers

As of day 133 of the conflict, over 36,000 Russian soldiers are estimated to have been killed. However, it’s likely that many of these soldiers are actually separatist fighters from the Donbas region, who are being mobilized and pushed to the front lines to conserve casualties from professional Russian soldiers. This raises questions about the true casualty rate for the Russian military.

While Russia has gained control of the Luhansk oblast, a region with mostly empty farmland and already-controlled capital city, it’s not a significant military victory for the world’s second most powerful military. The Russian military has made slow progress, advancing just a few square kilometers a day.

The war effort is being funded by Russia’s energy exports, and the price of oil is expected to collapse to $65 a barrel by the end of the year due to rising interest rates and global recession. This could spell trouble for Putin’s economy and may lead to a ceasefire proposal.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military capacity is strengthening, thanks to aid from the US and other NATO countries. Ukraine is receiving advanced weaponry, including HIMAR multiple rocket launchers and French Caesar self-propelled artillery systems.

The Russian economy is already feeling the effects of sanctions, with car manufacturing down 96% and truck manufacturing down 39% compared to last year. This is having a huge negative impact on the Russian economy and may ultimately end the war.
