What was it like working next to nuclear weapons?
As a former launch officer in the US Air Force, I was often asked how it felt to be around nuclear weapons. However, the reality is that I didn’t actually work with nuclear weapons on a daily basis. Instead, I was stationed in a launch control capsule, where the ICBMs were located in separate silos, spaced out by about 3 miles to increase survivability. I only occasionally visited the weapon storage area on base or went to sites for maintenance, where I would see the weapons. At first, it was unsettling, but after a few weeks, it became a normal part of the job.
