FINALLY The S-500!

Video Summary

I recently got my hands on a video of the S-500, a Russian anti-aircraft system that’s been under development for years. The S-500 has been touted as a system that can shoot down anything and everything, from ballistic missiles to hypersonic weapons, to even the latest stealth aircraft. But how much of this is true?

After analyzing the video, I can say that it’s impressive, to say the least. The S-500 seems to be a massive system, with a truck carrying it appearing to be a larger 10-wheeled variant of the BAZ 6909 used for the S-400. Each truck will carry two missiles, which seem to be similar to the S-300V’s 9M82 and the now-retired 51T6.

But the real question remains: just how good is this system? Can it really shoot down F-35s and B-2s? To answer this, we need to consider the radar component, as radar is what spots the threats and guides the missile to them. Unfortunately, the video doesn’t show us any of the radars in operation, only a blurry close-up of the missile launching.

Ballistic missiles require different attributes than surface-to-air missiles designed to shoot down aircraft. As for shooting down both, it’s difficult, as it involves sacrificing some capability. Air defense missiles require different attributes than ballistic missile interceptors, such as warhead and thrusters.

The S-500 is likely designed to shoot down medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, and possibly even hypersonic glide vehicles, which operate in an area between space and the atmosphere. Its size and the fact that it’s on wheels suggest it’s designed to be mobile.

The system’s effectiveness against hypersonic glide vehicles will be crucial, as they are becoming a growing concern. Israel and the US have systems like Arrow-3 and THAAD to counter this threat. Russia’s S-500 might be the first to have this capability, but more information is needed to understand its full potential.
