Artur Rehi Reacts to Wojtek – The bear that Went to War
Video Summary
In World War II, a surprising development occurred in the Polish army: a bear named Wojtek was officially drafted into the military. In 1942, a child in Iran gave a bear cub to Polish soldiers who were setting up a new unit in the Middle East. The bear was orphaned after its mother was killed by hunters. The soldiers took the cub in and named it Wojtek, which means “he who is happy in battle.” As the bear grew, it became a beloved morale-booster for the troops. It was even officially drafted into the Polish army and given a paybook and serial number. Wojtek became a mascot for the 22nd Artillery Supply Company and helped in the Battle of Monte Cassino, carrying artillery shells and supporting the soldiers. After the war, Wojtek was transferred to a zoo in Scotland, where it lived until its death in 1963 at the age of 21. Despite being a bear, Wojtek’s story highlights the strong bond between humans and animals, and its legend has become a symbol of hope for the Polish people.
