Drones strike sanctioned Russian explosives plant in central Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Drone attacks targeted the Sverdlov Defense Plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, early Sunday morning. The facility, which produces explosives for the Russian military, is under international sanctions.

The incident might be part of a broader pattern of intensified Ukrainian drone attacks against Russian military and fuel facilities this year. These strikes have significantly disrupted supplies crucial for the Russian military, often targeting bomb warehouses at airbases far from the front lines. As of this report, Ukrainian officials have not commented on the incident.

Residents reported explosions around 5:00 AM, followed by gunfire. Witnesses described seeing smoke rising from the industrial zone. Governor Gleb Nikitin stated that air defenses repelled the attack, though four firefighters suffered shrapnel injuries.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed 110 drones were intercepted overnight across several regions, including Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Nizhny Novgorod, Bryansk, and Moscow. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed one drone was destroyed near the capital.
