Americans on Omaha Beach (D-Day)

Video Summary

On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the largest amphibious landing operation in history, known as Operation Overlord, on five beaches in Normandy, France. At Omaha Beach, the US Army’s 1st Infantry Division faced fierce resistance from German machine guns and artillery, resulting in heavy casualties. Despite being vastly outnumbered and outgunned, the 16,000 US troops who landed on Omaha Beach that day were able to secure a small foothold, thanks to the bravery and improvisation of the soldiers. With the help of naval artillery and air support, the Allies eventually broke through the German defenses and secured the beach, although at a great cost of over 2,000 casualties. The success of the operation marked a turning point in World War II, paving the way for the liberation of Western Europe.
