Estonian Soldier reacts to Sinking of the Bismarck

Video Summary

In May 1941, the German battleship Bismarck, considered unsinkable, set sail to infiltrate the North Atlantic, where it was detected by British forces. The two admirals, Günther Lütjens and John Tovey, engaged in a cat-and-mouse game, with the Brits ultimately laying out a trap. On May 24, the British flagship HMS Hood was sunk by Bismarck’s guns, but its loss was avenged when the British aircraft carrier Ark Royal launched 15 Swordfish torpedo bombers, which hit Bismarck with three torpedoes, critically damaging its steering. The ship’s loss of maneuverability and AA guns made it vulnerable to further British attacks, and eventually, the battleships Rodney and King George V, along with cruisers, launched a broadside attack, disabling Bismarck’s guns and eventually sinking it at 9:02 am on May 27, 1941. The loss of Bismarck marked a turning point in the war, as the Germans ceased using battleships to protect supply convoys in the Atlantic.
